When you remove the phrase “core” training from your terminology and instead replace it with “positional strength” you will open yourself up to a much better understanding of what you are trying to accomplish with athletes in the gym.
.
Positional Strength refers to challenging the athlete to hold positions (positions which you as the coach may deem useful based on the demands of their activity) through different types of perturbations or stability challenges to the system.
.
As we have mentioned before the end goal is to make these drills more dynamic and more unpredictable. We do not want our athletes stuck in drill variations that remove degrees of freedom, and or are performed slowly for longer than necessary. These limited types of drills are purely academic. Once the concept is learned it must be challenged with a productive level of variability.

Here is a solid positional strength drill we use with some of our more advanced athletes. We’re always looking to check a lot of boxes and this doesn’t disappoint:

Split Stance Switches w/ Overhead Band Pull and Foot From Above To Plate.

1. The band serves to challenge the stability of the athlete as they move dynamically through a switching of the legs. The athlete must create good stiffness through the body to not be pulled off balance or into excessive lateral flexion of the trunk.

2. Holding the band overhead is a progression from the band in front of the chest, but is also a useful variation to promote solid posture of the trunk and keep optimal abdominal length.

3. Adding the plate in front requires the athlete to pick up the feet and strike down from above on the ground. This constraint helps expose an athlete who may use the less efficient strategy of sliding the front foot into the ground instead of coming from the top down.

Huge Congrats to @ironwolf03 on her 9/9 performance yesterday at @mbslingshot Record Breakers. Tasha finished with 419lbs (13lbs PR) squat, 242.5lbs (22.5lbs PR) bench press, and 501lbs (38lbs PR) deadlift! She weighed in at 144lbs and added 77.5lbs to her best total. Here’s a drill we really like for our throwing (as well as lax) athletes at TSH. Med Ball Shot Put w/ Foot From Above To 18” Box.

This drill adds a useful constraint to a typical shot toss that helps guide athletes toward discovering a few key elements to an efficient movement solution.

1. The added hip flexion on the front side helps promote a solid pull into the front hip. Not utilizing this action will be exposed quickly with the box as athletes will lose significant “pop” and fail to transfer weight to the front side. This helps weaken old habits and strengthen the new one.

2. The box helps expose an inefficient use of the upper half. Early flexion of the thoracic spine will feel off and athletes will be encouraged to use the front side shoulder better in order to stay proud chested through the release.

3. The front foot will be forced to come down from above to contact the box and the front foot will need to open to the target. A closed front side will be nearly impossible to overcome with this box height.

4. Lastly the “hip lock” position is exaggerated in this set up to help athletes feel the co contraction of the front side hip flexors and the back side hip extensors.
