I love using drills like this to build positional strength with our athletes.

I would encourage coaches to make sure that you are taking into account the direction that you are applying outside perturbations to the system from.

For our rotational athletes that have to be strong on one leg through follow throughs in throwing, swinging / hitting, and shooting it’s important to test that stability from behind the front side.

Mix up the knee angles and torso angles, and you have a great preparatory drill here.

[Pairing Perception and Action For Baseball and Softball]

It is important as coaches that we progress not only the physical demands of training but also the cognitive demands. On field movements are the product of our interpretation of the information we are processing. Very little in competitive sport operates in a closed fashion. Movement solutions emerge to solve various movement problems. We perceive to act, and we also act to perceive. There is a constant influx of sensory information that we are processing, and that our system is organizing movements and intended movements around.

Given this undeniable truth, in order to transfer to on field performance we must strive to keep perception and action coupled as much as possible.

Too often we use closed loop drills to influence movement outcomes. While this strategy can yield an acute increase in performance outcomes, it does not serve for long term retention, and often leaves coaches and athletes puzzled as to why the on field outcomes consistently fall short of practiced positions and approaches.

The games of baseball and softball are unique in the sense that they require processing of information in many different scenarios dependent upon the position, and side of the ball you are playing. There is an illusion in these games of routine and repetition that has led to a very low representative approach to practicing and performance training.

The level of cognitive challenge can and should be progressed throughout the development of a player, and throughout the course of a practice or training session - however, the end goal of each should be to link perception and action to the majority of dynamic movements and drills used in training.

Over the next few posts we will look at a few examples, and how we can link perception and action to training for more transferable outcomes. Each position on the field will require information processing from either other players, umpires, the ball / bat, or the game scenario.
